Spell preparation

From NWN2Wiki

Players Handbook The information on this page includes speculation of what will be included in NWN2. It derives from Dungeons and Dragons 3.5 rules from the SRD or other sources, but Obsidian may change the actual implementation in the game.

Some classes must choose their spells in advance of casting them.

Contents

[edit] Prepared casting

The cleric, druid, paladin, ranger, and wizard classes require spell preparation. However clerics and druid may also use spontaneous casting.

A character can prepare only spells they know for each class. The character uses a single spell slot for each instance of a spell they prepare.

[edit] Spontaneous casting

Clerics and druid can use spontaneous casting to cast spells they haven't prepared in exchange for losing a spell they have prepared.

[edit] Unprepared casting

Sorcerers, bards, favored souls, and spirit shamans cast their spells without having to prepare them in advance. They may cast any of their spells known, however they generally have less spells per day than preparation spellcasters.

Warlock invocations do not need to be prepared, and unlike spontaneous casters and most spell-like abilities, have no limit to the amount cast per day.

[edit] Domain spells

Clerics have a single spell slot for each spell level from 1st level upwards. This spell slot may only be used for the preparation of one of the two spells gained from the cleric's domains.

[edit] NWN comparison

  • Classes that were required to prepare their spells in NWN did so before resting.
  • Clerics in NWN did not have to use a specific spell slot for their domain spells.
