The Builds and their OriginsEdit

Red Sock [ Wizard 10, Arcane Scholar of Candlekeep 10, Red Wizard of Thay 10 ]

  • Wizard Powerbuild with INT 30, the highest possible DC and SR penetrating capabilities.

Rogued Red Sock [ Wizard 10, Arcane Scholar of Candlekeep 8, Red Wizard of Thay 10, Rogue 2 ]

  • Wizard Powerbuild with INT 30, a splash of Rogue for 9 maximized Skills, can double as Party Rogue.

HistoryEdit

The Red Sock Wizards are part of a specialized group of Red Wizards of Thay that recreated the far away Candlekeep Library in their own adapted/distorted way.

Origin of the Red Sock WizardsEdit

In Star Trek (TOS) there were Red Shirts (Security Officers), they were the first to die in away missions. Now there are Red Socks in NWN2!

They don't have much Healthpoints 180 (+30 Beetle = 210), so they would also be the first to die in epic battles, but unlike their Star Trek counterparts the Socks can deal some serious damage with the highest possible DC in their Specialized School of Magic (here: Evocation) and beat any SR's.

Rumors say that the Red Socks battlecry is Sock it up a notch! But rumors are a funny thing, they imply that there were survivors to report these events...

RWoT's 2nd School of MagicEdit

  • By taking the Evocation school you lose access to the Conjuration school (which in my opinion are rather weak in the epic levels compared to the other spell schools).
  • The Red Wizard of Thay loses another spell school as soon as his 1st level is taken. You can circumvent this problem by learning all spells from the School that you would lose (here: Illusion), before you take your 1st Red Wizard level. The Red Sock can cast level 9 spells at Character level 17, so you should be able to learn all Illusion spells before taking the 1st Red Wizard level (Red Sock lvl 19, Rogued Red Sock lvl 19).
  • You can of course choose other Specialized Schools of Magic, but Evocation is one of the better choice to deal damage. Necromancy should also work well.

A short ComparisonEdit

Red Sock:

  • gains +4 Caster Levels from the Practiced Spellcaster bug
  • (293 Skill points) you can only max 5+ skills / can't max most skills

Rogued Red Sock:

  • (323 Skill points) you can max 9+ skills
  • gains only +2 Caster Levels from the Practiced Spellcaster bug
  • 2 AC & 4 HP more then the Red Sock
  • Rogue Bonus feats and Proficiencies (Armor Proficiency (Light), Weapon Proficiency (Rogue), Sneak Attack (+1d6), Trapfinding, Evasion)
  • If you find a light armor that has 0 Arcane Spell Failure you can equipt it and still cast spells without having to use still spells

So what does that mean?

  • The Red Sock is the strongest possible Wizard from a magical Point of View (beating DC, SR).
  • The Rogued Red Sock is the sneaky brother/sister of the Red Sock, he can max 9 Skills and can double as a Party Rogue (cast knock to open containers). The only thing he loses, compared to the Red Sock is 2 Casterlevels from the Practiced Spellcaster bug. Not that big a deal, is it?

Pro & ContraEdit

Pro

  • very high Evocation Spell DC ( Spellcasting Prodigy adds another +1 DC)
  • it is possible to maximize the DC of the evocation spells by dropping 1 level of rogue and sacrificing wizard caster levels instead of RW caster levels. (Every 3 epic levels gives +1 to the DC of your spells including the ones above the level cap at 32, 35 and 38)
  • The Red Sock ignores Spell Resistance (SR) for Specialized School of Magic (here: Evocation) (Character Level 30 +5 bonus RWoT +6 Epic Spell Penetration +4 from Practiced Spellcaster, your Caster Roll agains Spell Resistance is 45). If you cast Assay Resistance you get an addtional +10 and a Greater Breach lowers the Targets SR by 5 and a Lesser Breach lowers the Targets SR by 3. So basically you can crack a Spell Resistance of 63!
  • INT 30 means you can cast more Spells then any other wizard. Spellcasting Prodigy adds even more spells for you to cast and you are treated as having INT 32! Get an +8 Intelligence Ring or a similar Item and you get an effective Intelligence of 40! (Even more Spells!)
  • INT 30 & Able Learner means you get 293 Skill Points. The only problem is that you can't max some of them, because you don't have Rogue or something similar to be able to spend 33 points in most skills, only 16 points.
  • can summon a familiar Beetle for an extra 30 HP

Con

  • low BAB
  • low AC
  • low HP
  • can't max most skills
  • no Epic Spells (once/per Day Spells are not that great in a prolonged battle) (Epic Spell Penetration could be replaced with any one Epic Spell, but with your casterlevel and boni from Red Wizard, they are hardly necassary.)
