Empower Vs Maximize

From NWN2Wiki

This is to record mainly opinions and some supporting facts around the discussion of which of these two feats is more worthwhile taking. Please keep discussion to the discussion page, or to the many threads on this subject.

Contents

[edit] Reasons for Empower.

  • Only 2 levels higher than spells normal level, 1 with Arcane Scholar, but does 80% or so of the damage that maximize does
  • Empowering is less expensive than maximize, but does only a little less damage.
  • With Damage resistance and a low damage spell, empower has a small chance of actually damaging where the normal and maximized versions would have no chance. ( You have to remember that empower damage exceeding maximize damage is rare, will get someone to show this in the math section later. ) (see talk page)
  • Required Feat for Arcane Scholars
  • Disintegrate is consistently more powerful when Empowered and an instant kill with a critical hit vs. most enemies.

[edit] Reasons for Maximize

  • Works well for single die roll spells ( Enervation for example)
  • More Damage ( 20% or so usually than empower )
  • Not Random

[edit] Reasons for them Both

  • Allows more efficent usage of spells slots and spell book management, Empower is 2 higher, Maximize is 3 higher which allow one spell to use available slots from 3 different levels.

[edit] Mathematics

This is included so as to allow a better comparison of numbers. The main thing to focus on is the Average Damage. Over time and many castings you are more likely to do this amount of damage, more damage will happen just as often as less so they will work to even each other out. Maximum Damage and Minimum damage are also generally factors in any discussion about this.

Damage is MdN, so a 5d6 fireball for example, the 5 would be M, and the 6 wound be N.

Normal Average Damage is M*(N + 1)*1/2. Minimum Damage is M, Maximum Damage is M*N. Note that the average damage is never half the maximum damage, but rather a bit above that. This is because given 1d6, you'll get 1-3 half the time, and 4-6 the other half, which makes the middle number actually 3.5 between these two.

Empowered Damage is similar to normal damage, but 1.5 times as much so the 1/2 becomes 3/4. This gives you M*(N + 1)*3/4. However the range is also affected, and the minimum damage is M*1.5 and the maximum damage is M*N*1.5.

Maximized Damage is always the same M*N, very reliable.

So given 5d6.
Label Minimum Average Maximum
Normal 5 17.5 30
Empowered 7.5 26.25 45
Maximized 30 30 30

10d3 100% of max.
Label Minimum Average Maximum
Normal 10 20 30
Empowered 15 30 45
Maximized 30 30 30

10d6 87.5%.
Label Minimum Average Maximum
Normal 10 35 60
Empowered 15 52.5 90
Maximized 60 60 60

10d8 on average 84.3% of max.
Label Minimum Average Maximum
Normal 10 45 80
Empowered 15 67.5 120
Maximized 80 80 80

On average, Maximize is always better than Empower for any die greater than d3, but with low dice, not by much.

The math goes like this: suppose a spell does MdN damage. Cast normally, this results in damage of M*(N + 1)*1/2. Cast Empowered, you get M*(N + 1)*3/4. Cast Maximized, it is simply M*N.

If N was, say, 20, then you gain 5.25 points per die from Empowering and 9.5 points from Maximizing so the latter is well worth the extra level. But NWN2 does not have d20 spells -- the most common case is actually N = 6 where you gain 1.75 points per die when Empowering and 2.5 points per die when Maximizing.
