Candlekeep

Candlekeep is a fortified castle near the town of Beregost on the Sword Coast. It is south along the coast from Baldur's Gate. It is the starting location for the player character in the first Baldur's Gate game. To gain entry to the halls of wisdom, a visitor must gift the library collection with a new tome of immense value. Mages study the vast accumulated library of arcane knowledge, gleaned from the writings of long dead mages, in Candlekeep to better understand how magic works. Ulraunt the Keeper of the Tomes rules the keep with his First Reader Tethtoril.
